Making a Second Disney Movie Club Account Disabled
If you subscribe to Disney's newsletters, you may have seen links to join the Disney Movie Club with an offer to receive 4 DVDs or Blu Rays for $1. The question is, what's the catch?
The Disney Movie Club works similarly to mail order music and movie services like Columbia House which peaked in popularity in the 90s.
Basically the way it works is that you can order 4 Disney movies up front for $1 with free shipping and in 2-4 weeks you will receive your movies on either DVD or Blu Ray (depending on what you chose when you signed up).
After that, you will have 2 years to fulfill a commitment which requires you to buy 5 more movies at the regular club price of $19.95 per DVD or $29.95 per Blu Ray.
The Numbers
With all of the sales retailers like Amazon and Target have on movies, it's easy to think that $29.95 is a steep price to pay for a Blu Ray. But let's break it down and see how the numbers actually play out.
Quantity | Price Each | |
Free | 4 | $0.00 |
Paid | 5 | $29.95 |
Total | 9 | $149.75 |
Above we look at the numbers using the Blu Ray pricing as an example. With the exclusion of taxes and shipping you will be spending $149.75 for a total of 9 Blu Ray movies. This breaks down to about $16.64 per Blu Ray which is actually a pretty good deal since Disney movies rarely sell for under $20 retail.
On top of that, once you fulfill your commitment, you can either cancel your membership or become a VIP member and get the chance to order movies at a discounted rate and even get dibs on some exclusive products offered only to Disney Movie Club members.
What Movies Are Available?
The Disney Movie Club actually has a very strong selection of Disney and Pixar movies on DVD and Blu Ray. If you are the type to purchase the newest Disney release as it comes out, the club may be very beneficial to you.
The image below is the first step of the registration process and it gives you a sample size of what films are available through the membership.
What To Look Out For
Now that you've eased your mind with the pricing of the movies and benefits of becoming a member, here is what you'll have to look out for.
Every month, the club will send you an email with the pick of the month. Basically the way this works is that they choose a movie and give you the option to decline it or accept it. If you don't do anything, they will automatically send it to you and you will be billed for it.
If you are billed for a movie using this method, it will go towards your commitment. Just be sure to stay on top of it or you may receive a movie you don't want.
End Game
As mentioned earlier, once you have fulfilled your commitment, you can cancel your membership at any time or continue as a VIP member. Being a VIP member is free and will allow you to receive special deals and discounts on future purchases as well as weekly deals where a certain movie will be on sale.
One of the perks of the VIP membership is that you can also get your hands on Disney pins (currently 11 available) which are exclusive to members. If you are a pin trader or collector, this is a wonderful perk that makes the DMC even more desirable.
Overview
In short, the Disney Movie Club is a wonderful investment for those that buy Disney movies on DVD and Blu Ray. If you see yourself purchasing 9 or more Disney movies in the next 2 years, you may actually save a good amount of money in the long run.
Perhaps the format of the Disney Movie Club may create a hesitance since it seems like a great deal up front with a commitment after the reward (like getting a lollipop before seeing the doctor). But once you break down the numbers, it really makes sense for someone who is either looking to build a collection or add to their existing one.
With some wonderful movies hitting theaters soon, the future is pretty bright for Disney home movie releases. With the added bonus of the VIP membership once you've fulfilled your obligation, Disney fans should be able to get a lot more out of this club than a discount on movie purchases.
